Policy and Procedure ManualChapter 240, Research Involving Human Subjects Responsible Department: Office of Research Certain activities that involve humans are not defined as research and therefore are not governed by University policy or State or Federal regulations on the protection of human subjects. Activities not considered research do not require review either by the Human Subjects Review Committee (HSRC) or by departments. Service relationships The normal relationship of patients to physicians, students to professors, and other clients to professionals in which the patient, student, or clients receiving aid or services intended only to meet the patient's own needs does not require review. Employee-employer relationships The normal employee-employer relationships in which legitimate services are rendered for salary or wages according to written or verbal contracts are also excluded. Professional consultation Consultations between professionals regarding their common or related fields of expertise do not involve research use of human subjects. Classroom exercises--Practica Review is not required for exercises designed as practica in University classes, in which students regularly practice upon each other techniques taught in the class such as interviewing, psychological testing, or physical examination. There are situations in which it might be difficult to be certain whether or not a study requires review for the protection of human subjects. The staff to the HSRC or the chair of the committee can provide advice. Copyright © 2006 The Regents of the
