Visiting (Postgraduate Research ___)--Postdoctoral Scholar (title code 3370) appointments are made to individuals who are pursuing a program of research training and apprenticeship under the direction of a research mentor with the approval of the department or research unit and of the Dean-Graduate Studies.
230-6 Departmental responsibility
Employing departments shall ascertain that prospective appointees meet all eligibility requirements before allowing the appointee to begin service.
230-10 Criteria for appointment
a. Persons to be appointed in the Visiting (Postgraduate Research ___)--Postdoctoral Scholar position must meet the definition of a postdoctoral scholar described in UCD Policy & Procedure Manual Section 210-65.
b. Registered students and candidates for a degree are ineligible
Appointment as a Visiting (Postgraduate Research ___)--Postdoctoral Scholar is usually at 100% time and for a period not to exceed five years. Total appointment as a postdoctoral scholar in all title codes, including Non-Student Postgraduate Researcher and Visiting Fellow, is not to exceed a total of five years.
Salary levels are determined by the department or hiring unit's Postdoctoral Training Program and Compensation Plan, reflecting the compensation customary for the field and salary equity within the department. Departments or research units without an approved training and compensation plan on file with the Office of Graduate Studies will not be allowed to use this title without prior approval from the Office of Graduate Studies.
a. Vacation
A Visiting (Postgraduate Research ___)--Postdoctoral Scholar is eligible to accrue vacation in accordance with Section 730.
b. Sick leave
A Visiting (Postgraduate Research ___)--Postdoctoral Scholar is eligible to accrue sick leave and may be eligible for childbearing leave. (See Sections 710 and 760.)
c. Health insurance
Health insurance availability varies according to the appointment. Inquiries should be directed to the hiring unit's benefits representative or the Benefits Office.
d. Retirement
A Visiting (Postgraduate Research ___)--Postdoctoral Scholar is not eligible for participation in the University of California Retirement Plan (UCRP).
The Dean-Graduate Studies has been delegated authority to approve appointments to the Visiting (Postgraduate Research ___)--Postdoctoral Scholar title. Authority for initial appointments has been provisionally redelegated to hiring units that have filed a Postdoctoral Training Program and Compensation Plan with the Office of Graduate Studies. Petitions for exception to policy should be forwarded to the Appointments and Planning section, Graduate Studies.
