Policy and Procedure ManualChapter 290, Health and Safety Services Responsible Department: Environmental
Health and Safety This section establishes policies and procedures for the interaction of UC Davis personnel with representatives of health and safety regulatory agencies. See UCDHS Hospital Policies & Procedures Manual Section 1053 for additional information on regulatory agency reviews at UC Davis Health System. A. It is the policy of the University to cooperate with Federal, State, and local government inspectors. B. For the health and welfare of visitors including employees’ children, access to areas not generally open to the public (laboratories, shops, agricultural and animal areas) is provided only under supervision and with the approval of the department head. Department heads may issue more restrictive visitor policies at their discretion. A. The Office of Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) provides technical assistance to interpret regulatory requirements dealing with environmental health and safety issues that are applicable to UCD facilities and activities. B. EH&S serves as liaison with the regulatory agencies. C. The Director of EH&S or his/her designated representative will accompany any representative of local, State, or Federal regulatory agencies during any investigation or inspection of UCD-controlled facilities. 1. The Director of EH&S or his/her designee will inform Employee and Labor Relations of the investigation or inspection. 2. Labor Relations will contact bargaining unit representatives to offer the opportunity to accompany the regulatory agency representative and EH&S, as appropriate. D. Department heads, supervisors, and employees are responsible for compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations as they relate to operations under their control. Call EH&S on campus (530-752-1493) or at UCDHS (916-734-2740) for the following: A. To refer regulatory or safety representatives who wish to investigate or inspect any UCD facility. B. To request an audit or evaluation of any existing facility, equipment, or activity that appears to present a health or safety hazard. C.
